“You’re going to hate me,” Rachel said to Mel when she arrived at Rachel’s apartment.

“Crap, what did you do? You’re not abandoning your project already, are you?” Mel stepped into the apartment and threw her arms up in the air. But as soon as she saw the design templates and images scattered all over the dining room table, her tone changed. “Oh, those are too cute!”

“I was thinking that I would go into psychology in addition to my online vet tech courses,” Rachel said. “I’ve been doing a lot of research on color therapy—you know, for the ‘Drapes’ side of ‘Dogs and Drapes’. Anyway, I thought that a degree in psychology or maybe interior decorating might actually come in handy.”

“That’s a fantastic idea,” Mel said. “I thought you would second guess your hesitation to get a degree. You don’t half-ass things so it seemed like you would end up getting a degree anyway.”

Rachel nodded. “I figure that I’ll do some affiliate promotions on the website and then use that money to pay for night courses. Or, you know, help pay for night courses.”

“Smart,” Mel said. “But that doesn’t make me hate you.”

“No, you’re going to hate me because I invited Kurt to come with us to the dress shop.”

“What? Ugh. Why? He’s a boy.”

“Yeah, well, he might be a boy but I figured that I should get close to him again before the trip tomorrow. Just to make sure that everything really is okay. So if I can spend some time with him, without Jay there, I can get an honest answer out of him.”

“Are you dumping me then?”

“No! No, of course not. I totally want you there. I can’t go dress shopping without my bestie.”

“Good. I was hoping that you’d say that.” Mel took her purse and dumped it out on the table. A rockslide of nail polish bottles fell out and scattered all over the table. “Now let’s get started.”

Rachel and Mel arrived at the wedding gown boutique decked out in yoga pants and pullover sweaters. Easier to take off when they changed into some wedding gowns. Yes, “they.” It was important to Mel that she be able to try on dresses also. In particular, the ones that she picked out for Rachel. Rachel knew—of course—that they were just dresses for herself but what did it matter? No one was getting married anyway.

Rachel reached for the door handle of the small boutique with her freshly manicured nails. She went simple with a French tip—something classy, yet elegant that might make her parents think that she’s taking good care of herself. Right inside the door was Kurt, who was chatting up one of the employees there as he was waiting for them.

The girl that he was chatting up seemed to be around their age. Rachel frowned. He was supposed to be bringing some girl with him to the trip. Why was he constantly flirting with all of the women that he ran across? Maybe he wasn’t the type of guy that she wanted in her life.
